On 13 November GP Care won a six month pilot contract to deliver urology diagnostic and assessment services to c50,000 patients within the Fourways PBC consortium in South Gloucestershire.
The service provides a rapid access ‘one-stop-shop’ diagnostic and assessment service for common urological conditions. This includes:
- Assessment of common urological complaints and recommendations to the GP for on-going management and treatment. GP’s can request specific tests presently only available after referral into secondary care (‘immediate’ ultra sensitive PSA, urinalysis, uroflow and bladder scan studies). All tests and clinical diagnosis will be carried out in the one appointment. As well as routine appointments, the service is able to ensure that patients identified by the service as requiring urgent onward ‘2 week’ cancer referral, will be seen by a NHS consultant within a total of 2 weeks from the date of cancer being suspected;
- A one stop Haematuria service (including flexible cystoscopy and ultrasound scan);
- A one stop prostate assessment service (including PSA, IPSS, prostatic scan – without biopsy); and
- Consultant-led appraisal of patients who have been recurrently brought back to Trust clinics as no decision has been taken to either treat definitively or discharge.
Diagnostic assessment outcomes are reported to GPs within 2 working days of an appointment. Onward referrals for follow-up procedures are made by GPs except in urgent cases where the GP Care service makes the referral directly into secondary care and subsequently notifies the GP of the decision.
The service is provided from a clinic based in Clifton, Bristol that is well equipped, easily accessible and has good parking facilities.
Initial indications are that this is a highly successful service delivering high quality patient care via an improved patient pathway and delivering a significant cost saving to South Gloucestershire PCT. If the pilot contract is deemed to be a success then it is anticipated that the contract will be extended to cover all of the c250,000 patients within South Gloucestershire. As such this represents a key contract win for GP Care.
