Cervical Cancer (HPV) Vaccinations in Bristol - GARDASIL

The cervical cancer vaccine – GARDASIL – which offers protection against four strains of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) as well as protection against genital warts is now available in GP Care clinics across South Gloucestershire, Bristol and North Somerset.

Studies have shown that almost all cancers of the cervix are caused by a virus. There are only two UK licensed vaccines which offer protection against this. GARDASIL offers 98% efficacy against virus types 6,11,16 and 18 as well as 99% protection against genital warts. The other vaccine Cervarix offers protection from 2 strains of the HPV virus only (types 16 and 18).

GP Care offers weekly appointments for girls and women aged 9 to 26 years and boys aged 9 to 15 years in the Bristol area. Women should ideally be vaccinated before they become sexually active and potentially exposed to HPV. There are flexible appointment times to suit patients at an all inclusive price of £399 for the course of 3 injections which are given over a six month period.

Further Information on Cervical Cancer (HPV) Vaccinations in Bristol

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer worldwide in women under 45 with 2,200 cases in the UK annually. If you would like to maximise the protection available for you or a member of your family using Gardasil, then please contact us.

The main cause of cervical cancer is a virus called the human papilloma virus (HPV) which is highly contagious and passed from person to person by sexual, skin-skin genital contact. HPV can also cause genital warts though many women get HPV without knowing it and with no symptoms.

The HPV vaccination requires a course of three injections over a period of six months. Vaccination, alongside regular smear tests and practicing safe sex can all help to reduce the risk of cervical cancer.

GARDASIL offers protection for girls and young women ages 9 to 26 and boys aged 9 to 15. Vaccination is recommended from the age of 9 because GARDASIL works when given before there is any contact with HPV Types 6, 11, 16, and 18.

GARDASIL is now available in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset and has been used in the USA, Canada and Australia for many years. It was the first vaccine approved by the European Commission. 20 million vaccines have been supplied to date by the manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur MSD.
